Advanced Lighting Controls

The California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program (CALCTP) is a statewide initiative aimed at increasing the use of lighting controls in commercial buildings. CALCTP will educate, train and certify licensed C-10 electrical contractors and state-certified general electricians in the proper programming, testing, installation, commissioning and maintenance of advanced lighting control systems. Such systems typically include dimmers, occupancy sensors, photo-sensors, relay modules and communication-based control devices.

The California Community Colleges are partners in the CALCTP initiative, currently assisting in the development of a training course for building operations professionals. Titled CALCTP-BOP, this program is being designed to improve operations and maintenance of lighting control systems. It complements current CALCTP offerings for C-10 contractors, state-licensed electricians, and acceptance testers.

The Need

California commercial buildings consume approximately 31,000 GWh annually for lighting. Building owners often look to energy-efficient lighting retrofits as a means to reduce this usage. However, routine maintenance, repair and retro-commissioning of existing lighting controls systems may provide a much greater opportunity for energy savings. Proper training is necessary to ensure the maintenance, repairs and basic retrofits are completed according to best practices, achieving maximum energy savings and return on investment without compromising lighting quality and efficacy.

CALCTP provides electrical contractors with a skilled, knowledgeable workforce that can effectively sell, bid, install, and verify lighting controls projects. These objectives are currently achieved through two separate programs: a lighting controls installation program (CALCTP-I) and an acceptance testing program (CALCTP-AT). The CALCTP-BOP initiative expands these training programs to address building operators who are often responsible for the maintenance, repair and basic retrofit of lighting systems and controls. Course modules currently under development include:

  • Lighting Design and Anatomy
  • Lighting Control Strategies & Systems
  • Building Codes and Compliance Requirements
  • Understanding your Building and Its Lighting Systems
  • Lighting System Maintenance
  • Troubleshooting
